Course Details
Mathematics
Students taking the IB Programme must choose one of the Mathematics courses. There are three courses offered one at the Higher Level and two at the Standard Level. This is to cater for the wide range of the student’s abilities in mathematics.
Higher Level
This programme is designed for students with a good background and ability in mathematics and should prove a useful preparation for the many university courses in which mathematics can be applied, particularly physics, engineering or technology. The course is mainly pure mathematics but some options in applied mathematics are taught in the second year. Those intending to take the course should be highly self-motivated and willing to do independent work.
Mathematical Methods (SL)
This is a demanding course which requires a substantial amount of background in mathematics and contains a wide variety of topics. It is a good course to choose for students planning to follow further studies in science, economics, geography or business administration. This course covers many of the topics of the Higher Level course but not to the same depth.
Mathematical Studies (SL)
This course is intended for those students whose interests do not lie in a field where mathematical skills and techniques are needed. The emphasis is on the application of mathematics to real-life situations. A piece of personal research in the form of a project is a requirement of this programme. It is suitable for students planning to pursue a university course in humanities, languages etc.
The choice at Standard Level between Mathematical Methods and Mathematical Studies requires careful consideration. We will counsel you adequately, based on your performances in the Placement Test.
Further Maths (SL)
This course caters to students with a good background in mathematics who have attained a high degree of competence in a range of analytical and technical skills, who display considerable interest in the subject. Most of these students will intend to study mathematics at university, either as a subject in its own right or as a major component of a related subject. The course is designed specifically to allow students to learn about a variety of branches of mathematics in depth and also to appreciate practical applications.
Although Further Maths is at the Standard Level, students registering for this course will be presumed to know the topics in the core syllabus of Math HL and have studied one of the options irrespective of whether they have registered for Mathematics HL.
Further Math is currently offered at MUWCI as a 7th subject only
Other Considerations
The Mathematics Placement Test
Since mathematics is compulsory for all students doing the IB Diploma, the Mathematics Department at the Mahindra UWC will conduct a Placement Test for all students. This will enable the department to place the students in the correct programme (Math Studies, Maths Methods or Maths Higher Level).
Calculators
The IB Mathematics courses at all levels require a Texas Instruments TI-83/TI-83+ calculator. You should purchase only this type of calculator. If you are not able to afford, or cannot find, a TI-83 the school ill be able to loan you one.
